Alum is a chemical compound often used in wastewater treatment and sometimes as a food additive. Because alum on its own would make the lake too acidic to support aquatic life in the lake, about 1,000 gallons of a second chemical, sodium aluminate, were applied simultaneously to 'buffer' the alum, maintaining near-neutral pH in the lake. The addition of alum and sodium aluminate to the lake posed little risk to humans, aquatic plants, and wildlife.

When the chemicals are added to the water, a flaky white solid 'floc' forms. Aluminum in the floc will chemically bind phosphorus dissolved in the water, and then sink to form a layer on the bottom that will limit internal phosphorus recycling from lake sediments. The treatment resulted in dramatic improvements to the water quality and appearance of the lake.

Greenlake is now very swimmer friendly. Algae growth and closures were sometimes a problem before the City of Seattle performed a comprehensive cleanup. It is now one of the cleanest public swimming areas in the Seattle area.

King County's Swimming Beach Monitoring Program shows current conditions at several swimming beaches, and Greenlake's water quality in particular.

Swimming

Greenlake is very very swimmer friendly. This would be the last show. Beginning in 1970 the theater was dismantled. Stage right now serves as a pedestrian pier and stage left providing dock and storage for greenlake rowing club's crew boats. Some sections of the grandstand are still in place. see Aquatheater today

45th and Wallingford - then and now

Giant signs in Wallingford reflect changing times

 			  			STAN STAPP

THEN: A look down on Wallingford's principal business corner in the fall of 1950.

JEAN SHERRARD

NOW: Using his pole, Jean Sherrard lifts his camera higher than Ron Petty's 18-foot bronze "Animal Storm," right-of-center. It is a celebration of the 28 varieties of animals that can be found in Wallingford. Across North 45th Street is the landmark "Wallingford" sign.

Scrambling to the classical roof of Interlake School (now the Wallingford Center), a photographer from the old North Central Outlook got this record of the intersection where Wallingford Avenue crosses North 45th Street with a jog. Besides showing the blacktop of the school's playfield, bottom right, the photo highlights the new grocery with a mighty ambitious name: Foodland. Foodland's grand opening — a sign is in the window — began on Nov. 17, 1950, with a spotlight and a great orchid giveaway: 500 of them. However, not everything was ready, including the neon sign on the roof — seen here — and Van de Kamps bakery, which took a few days to move in. Although still medium-sized, Foodland acted like a super store. There were 14 feet of self-defrosting food cases and 34 feet of self-service clear-wrapped meat. And most fascinating, the doors opened to electric eyes. By the end of its first prosperous decade, the new grocery was razed for a parking lot to service a true "supermarket" directly behind it with the wonderfully silly name Food Giant. For 40 years the big red neon block letters spelling FOOD GIANT extended nearly the length of the roof. It and the Grandma's Cookies sign on North 34th Street were the Wallingford neighborhood's principal pop symbols. When QFC bought the store in the late 1990s and tried to ditch the symbol for its own, a protest from the store's neighbors brought the compromise we see in Jean Sherrard's "now." By recycling seven of the old sign's big letters, a new and blue sign of equal grandeur and iconic appeal took its place. It named the neighborhood.
original story

 	 	 		 		  		© 2009 The Seattle Times C

Greenlake Community Wiki

Welcome! (yes, one man) behind Vera Fitness are over-the-moon to launch their first wellness studio in the veritable fitness mecca of Greenlake. With backgrounds covering everything from dance, holistic healing, post-op rehab, yoga, pilates, natural body care, integrative exercise for clients dealing with cancer, MS and autoimmune disorders, and even certified bike fitting, the multi-certified cutting edge trainers have eased nicely into a holisitc fitness regime with Seattle's high-functioning (read: busy) wellness-craving women.

the following is copied from the website at verafitness.com:

“Vera Fitness is a viable expression of who I am and what I love t o do.”

         Hours
Monday-Thursday 5:30AM-9PM
Friday 5:30AM-7:30PM
Saturday 8AM-4PM
Sunday CLOSED

Phone: (206) 453-4632

Email: greenlake@verafitness.com

This is our vision. We believe that if everyone associated with Vera Fitness can own this statement, it will develop a true baseline community of authentic people. From there we intend to change the world, one person at a time. To create this level of authenticity we spend time, energy, and resources developing emotional intelligence or EQ. Unlike IQ which we can't change, EQ can be trained and developed. The founders, along with every Vera Fitness employee, are enrolled in ongoing training. It is our way of investing in open communication and conflict resolution. The result is a healthier community and a better company.

Vera Fitness trainers are the best at what they do. They are great personal trainers who have gone through a series of requirements and training. Each Vera Fitness trainer is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, has completed Technogym's Kinesis training, and is enrolled in ongoing emotional intelligence training. The result is a trainer who listens and understands her clients.
The hour-long session led by a Vera Fitness trainer combines cardio, flexibility, and strength training using theKinesis, a revolutionary piece of equipment that enables 360 degree free range of motion. The result is a flexible and holistic workout that can be accomplished in a short period of time.

Neighborhood resources
I worked backstage at this concert. It was an afternoon concert with Three
Dog Night and a group from Canada that I cannot remember. I got to work
backstage because a friend of mine tipped me off on how to do it. The show
was put on by Boyd Grafmire Productions. The on site manager was a Hawaiian woman named Geri. I was told to find her and make my pitch to her. I found her and asked. She said yes. I was in. We basically moved stuff off the stage. The Green Lake Aqua Theatre was built to put on shows by the Aqua Follies. The was a pool (moat?) in front of the stage with two 40 foot diving towers on either side. The seating capacity was probably 2000 at most. The show started around 1pm with the Canadian band on first. Then Three Dog Night. I remember they played through Bruce amps. Mike Alsop played a Telecaster. Floyd Sneed played a double bass Rogers drumset. I almost dropped the bass drum setup when we struck the stage. Zep was on last. I was given a cherry job. Go out to the street to meet the band when they came in. I was given a blue armband to identify me as a crew member. I was 14 but big for my age so I probably looked like I could handle the responsibility. I found the band in the van as advertised. I stopped them and told them I would guide them in. They called me a string of obscenities, and they sounded drunk. I walked the van to the back gate through the crowd. We were in. We set up Zep's stuff behind Three Dog Nights' stuff. Jimmy Page was using Rickenbacker Transonic amps and cabinets. The cabinets have a unique trapaziodal shape. I don't remember what John Paul Jones used, or what drums Bonham
had. I do remember the Danelectro guitar that Jimmy Page used as it was
next to me for most of the show. The band came on around 5pm on an unusally
nice day for early May in Seattle. Of the songs I remember Robert Plant saying
to the audience that they were going to play the single "Communication
Breakdown", to a light smattering of boos and requests for "Good Times, Bad Times", which is what the local stations were playing more often.

The show was hosted by radio DJ Burl Barer. If I remember right he was from KOL-FM, though it could have been KISW. I sat next to him for most of the show on a steamer trunk to the side of Jimmy Page. In July 2001 I received a telephone solicitation from the Washington Firefighters Association announcing the next voice I would hear was going to be Burl Barer. I told him I sat next to him at Led Zep Greenlake. He said "I remember it well..." and we talked for the next five minutes about the concert. He said he has pictures of the concert. I might be in some. I also saw the Gold Creek Park conert at the Seattle Pop Festival and the Seattle Center Arena in October, both in 1969.

courtesy: http://www.geocities.com/ledcollector.geo/May111969.html

I also attended this concert on my 15th birthday.
